Notes & Reviews:

These quintets for guitar and strings were created in the 1790s for the Duke of Benavente-Osuna. From the dramatic G445, whose last movement ends in dark turbulence, to the sunny disposition of G446, this selection reveals Boccherini's deft adaptation of his more traditional music to novel sound-worlds. Massimo Scattolin's performances represent an important addition to the Boccherini discography.

American Record Guide, January/February 2013
In May/June 2012 I reviewed a three-disc Naxos set by the Danubius Quartet with Zoltan Tokos. It's only a few dollars more, and you get all eight quintets, better sound, better guitar balance, and a stronger cellist. And if you're interested in the guitarist, Pepe Romero and a quartet from ASMF offer all eight quintets on a budget Philips reissue for even less, and is superior to both of these.

Good music poorly recorded
Boccherini - GUITAR QUINTETS - Newton Records

These quintets for guitar by Luigi Boccherini have long been an established part of classical guitar repertoire; guitarist Massimo Scattolin, violinist Franco Mezzena (whose previously re-released CD of violin and guitar sonatas by Gragnani is lovely) and the rest of the quintet play them with skill and sensitivity.
Sadly neither they nor the music here is well served by this very odd sounding recording. Somewhere along the line from microphone placement, to “live” mixing, to later remixes, mastering and manufacturing, someone seriously dropped the ball.
The result, with its wildly uneven dynamics, is nearly unlistenable (like having the worst seat in the house) whether heard on a car stereo, home audio system, or ghetto blaster.
Anyone really interested in getting to know these quintets would be better off with the Phillips recording of Pepe Romero and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble.
Newton Records has done a generally good job of making out of print recordings available to a new audience; their re-issue of works by the Amsterdam Guitar Trio has been particularly well received. Unfortunately, “Guitar Quintets” with its wobbly sound quality, cannot counted as one of their notable successes.
