On the death of William Lawes, King James I - who called him "The Father of Music" - observed several weeks of mourning. Lawes is set out from among the composers of the golden age of English music for the modernity, audacity, and depth of his writing. The works collected here use a very unique combination of two bowed string instruments, violin and bass viol, and two plucked instruments, the harp and the theorbo, for which Lawes wrote concertante parts. The result is music of extreme sophistication and contrapuntal complexity.
