Notes & Reviews:

American Record Guide, May/June 2013
This is Rachel Kolly d'Alba's second album with the National Orchestra of the Loire and John Axelrod. She is maintaining her national theme, this time moving from France to America. Gershwin is represented by Alexander Courage's Fantasy on Porgy and Bess. Always very colorful, and Kolly d'Alba and the orchestra are brilliant at every turn. In Leonard Bernstein's Serenade for violin and orchestra, America looks to Europe for ideas. Bernstein finds them in Plato's Symposium. Each of the five movements is statements made by one or more of the dinner guests on the subject of love. Bernstein's characterizations are clever and often lovely. Kolly d'Alba and company are as good here as they were in the Gershwin. Kolly d'Alba apparently finds no difficulties here and dispatches the score brilliantly, and it's good to hear the piece with the orchestral accompaniment for a change. She plays a Stradivarius built in 1732.
