On this collection of world première recordings, composer John McCabe's musical connections with the natural world stretch from high summer in England, via the deserts of Arabia, to the sub-tropical rainforests of Australia. Les martinets noirs is the French name for swifts - a bird similar to the barn swallow. McCabe describes them as "acrobatic Pucks of the air," adding that one of his annual delights in summer is to watch them swooping around the treetops and chimneys. The violin duo Retorica excel as the acrobatic swifts, while trumpet soloist Angela Whelan personifies the spirit of the rainforest in Rainforest II. In Rainforest I, members of the Orchestra Nova are joined by John McCabe on piano in a large-scale work redolent of the sights and sounds of the rainforests of Queensland. The recording is rounded off with Caravan, a short work for string orchestra inspired by the sight of a caravan approaching in the Arabian desert.
