Album Summary
Henze, Hans Werner : Royal Winter Music (Sonata no 1), for guitar
Henze, Hans Werner : Royal Winter Music 2
Elliot Simpson (Guitar)
Notes & Reviews:
Hans Werner Henze states that his idea of developing music from Richard of Gloucester's monologue (Now is the winter of our discontent) and of generating more music from that material, was conceived during the 1960s but took concrete form when Julian Bream asked him to write a substantial new guitar work.
American Record Guide, January/February 2013
But this is some remarkable music making. Simpson is even more colorful than Tanenbaum, though the mark of his teacher is evident. I also prefer his performance to Franz Halasz on Naxos, though you won't go wrong with any of the three.
