Notes & Reviews:

Acclaimed British pianist Paul Lewis returns to the music of Franz Schubert with another two-disc collection of works for solo piano. His fifth release in the series, this set features the great A minor Piano Sonata D.845, the Impromptus D.935, the Moments Musicaux D.780, the Allegretto D915 and the always-popular Wanderer Fantasy D.760. This release features some of Schubert's most popular and highly regarded compositions for piano and will undoubtedly further enhance Lewis' growing reputation as a specialist in this repertoire and a true heir to the great Alfred Brendel.

Chicago Tribune
Lewis is his own man as a Schubert interpreter. The curly-haired Briton brings his own keen insights and sensibility to this repertory, and his feeling for the composer's special lyricism is there for all to admire.

Outstanding performances...He is dazzling in the brilliant passages (wonderful F minor and B flat impromptus). Even more important, he finds a beautiful glow for those quintessential Schubert moments of deep, sad stillness.

BBC Music Magazine, Christmas 2012
His playing of everything here is exemplary; if one were ever tempted to say a recording was 'definitive' then this is the time...Playing such as Lewis's expands and extends my ideas about what Schubert could do...Lewis shows, more than perhaps any pianist I have heard, how much latent violence there is in almost all Schubert's writing for the piano...I'd be surprised if any Schubert lover didn't find these two discs a revelation.

American Record Guide, March / April 2013
Lewis makes the music speak at all times with great interest and with fascinating contrast. He fully realizes the depth and seeming simplicity of the music. It is a fairly easy piece to play, and Lewis makes it a lovely experience, emotionally satisfying. In Impromptus, all is in beautiful proportion and all flows forth with beguiling ease. Impromptu 2 maintain an almost childlike simplicity at its best and purest. Impromptu 3, a theme and variations, uses Schubert's beloved Rosamunde theme with imagination and charm. These are wondrous performances. There is an undeniable excitement in the last two sections.
