This recording includes a rare performance of Brahms' cantata Rinaldo, recorded live at the Salzburg Summer Riding School 2007. South African born Johan Botha sings the tenor part. His international breakthrough occurred in 1993 at the Opera de la Bastille as Pinkerton in Puccini's Madame Butterfly.

The Beethoven symphony is quite well played. The playing is poised and well controlled, so the effect is exhilarating. A fine tenor, comfortable with both Italian and German repertory, and he has the power and technique to do justice to Brahms's challenges. The chorus is likewise excellent. De Billy moves the work along well, bringing out the drama of Goethe's text to good effect.
