Notes & Reviews:
As soon as we knew we would have an opportunity to work on this album together, Michael McMahon suggested we record Guy Ropartz's 4 Poèmes de l'Intermezzo. I had never heard of the composer before, let alone the songs themselves. I was struck by the depth of feeling and immediacy in Ropartz's setting of Heine's poetry. Heine's Lyrisches Intermezzo also happens to be the source of Schumann's celebrated song-cycle Dichterliebe. This "lyric intermezzo" is a collection of sixty-six poems describing the torments of a young poet in love. These poems are preceded by a prologue in prose about an errant knight in love with a fair maiden. One is immediately reminded of Don Quixote and his elusive Dulcinea. The theme of the elusive feminine is widespread in Heine's sixty-six poems and especially those chosen by Ropartz and Schumann in these songs. We have included Ravel's Don Quichotte à Dulcinée in the spirit of Heine's prosodic intro to the Intermezzo of poems.
