Notes & Reviews:

Stravinsky's concerts were a genuine feast for Russian listeners. Six concerts - four in Moscow and two in Leningrad - presented Stravinsky's early works and compositions from 1930 - 1940. The most famous was the ballet "Petrushka," which was staged for the first time in 1911 and remained one of his most popular works. "Orpheus" was created after an idea by Georg Balanchine, one of the greatest choreographers ever and an incomparable interpreter of Stravinsky's music on the ballet stage. The work of the same period, "Ode," was composed in memoriam of Sergei Koussevitzky's wife, who died in 1942. The short but spectacular play "Fireworks" was composed by Stravinsky as a wedding present for his friends Maximilian Steinberg and Nadezhda Rimsky-Korsakova, daughter of the great composer.
