Notes & Reviews:

Of Sophocles' tragedy Oedipus in Colonus, Mendelssohn wrote to his friend, historian Johann Gustav Droysen, "The mood and verse rhythms are so truly musical throughout that I do not need to consider the individual words and only have to set those moods and rhythms to music; then the chorus is ready." Gerhard Löbling, dramatic producer of the MDR Concerts, initiated these unique concerts.
