During the first half of the nineteenth century Neukomm was one of Europe's most highly regarded composers. He was the highly favored protégée of the French diplomat Talleyrand and established contacts with the high nobility. With a mind of his own, his originality is demonstrated in his 4 orchestral fantasies, which he termed an Essay in a New Genre.

From that point on this work is clearly homage to Haydn, Neukomm's teacher. In many ways it's like the Military Symphony with a bigger, more muscular orchestra, especially in the Minuet (II). The performances of the Symphony and the Fantasy in D minor show just how superb Willens and the Cologne Academy are. Here it sounds like they use superbly tuned period instruments with 6- 5-3-3-2 strings and a full array of woodwinds, brass, and timpani. Their playing is utterly alerted, pungent, and highly rhythmic, with warm lovely quiet sections and a huge breadth of expression. And superb engineering captures every dynamic level with richness and balance.
