Beethoven: Symphonies & Overtures / Otto Klemperer

Notes & Reviews:

Beethoven's symphonies & overtures have always been of high interest to all types of music lovers. Beethoven struggled with deafness, constantly searching deep inside his inner being for a spark of inspiration. Klemperer, having fights for his own life, could relate to this compelling desire to express what was inside of him. This 10-CD set not only includes the complete symphonies but also all nine overtures and extracts from the Incidental music to Egmont and the ballet The Creatures of Prometheus.

ClassicsToday
Fashions in Beethoven playing have gone through several phases since these recordings first appeared. Indeed, the conductor's dark, foreboding countenance, expressive severity, and implacable pacing will seem utterly anachronistic to fans of Beethoven on period instruments. The music may take shape slowly under Klemperer's guidance, but damned if it doesn't move. Every phrase, each orchestral balance, and all transitional junctures patiently unfold, and pull you in with the force of a hidden, powerful magnet. This approach proves spellbinding for the symphonies and overtures...

American Record Guide, May/June 2013
Here are all his Beethoven orchestral recordings made with the Philharmonia for EMI. Dedicated Klemperer fans will already have most or all of these performances, so it will be up to the curious to buy this collection. Two lures: the sound is exceptionally good for recordings of this period and second, the price is unbeatable: $45 for 10 discs!
