Notes & Reviews:
BMOP/sound's second Michael Gandolfi CD, From the Institutes of Groove, features the composer's recent concertos for "orchestral underdogs" - bassoon, bass trombone, and alto saxophone. Working individually with soloists Richard Svoboda (bassoon), Angel Subero (bass trombone), and Kenneth Radnofsky (alto saxophone), Gandolfi has created complex and textural works with layers of contrasts typical of the composer's oeuvre. BMOP musicians led by Gil Rose perform brilliantly on this disc that includes Fantasia for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra and Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra and From the Institutes of Groove for Bass Trombone and Orchestra.
American Record Guide, January/February 2014
Michael Gandolfi's From the Institutes of Groove (2009), a 12-minute concerto for bass trombone in two movements, is so titled owing to Mr Subero's activity as a salsa player. The Bassoon Concerto (2009) was written for Boston Symphony principal bassoonist Richard Svoboda. In the traditional three movements, the piece is likable and entertaining. The program closes with the Fantasia for alto saxophone and orchestra (2006). Its four movements are, like most of the music on this program, in classical ABA form, and are in that sense easily accessible to most listeners. All of this is crowd-pleasing, enjoyable, and rewarding for performers and listeners alike. All involved do themselves proud.
