The Other Wagner - Showcasing uncommon Wagner piano works, orchestral works, overtures, marches, songs

Notes & Reviews:

In addition to his operas, Wagner composed a small number of nonoperatic works. The Other Wagner showcases his orchestral works, overtures, marches, songs, choral works and piano music. The 3-CD collection includes Der Tag Erscherint, a choral piece Wagner composed as his first duty when appointed Kapellmeister in 1843 in Saxony; five romantic songs composed for Mathilde Wesendock as well as a piano transcription of the Siegfried Idyll by Artur Rubinstein among others.

The plums...are two classic accounts of the Wesendonck-Lieder: in Felix Mottl's orchestration by the incomparable Christa Ludwig and Otto Klemperer; and in the original piano version by a radiant 25-year-old Jessye Norman, with Irwin Gage, in 1969.
