Andreas Hammerschmidt: Machet die Tore weit; Johann Rosenmuller: Magnificat / Gil Scarlattisti; Jochen Arnold

Notes & Reviews:

There is uncertainty about precisely which year, but 2011/2012 sees the 400th anniversary of the birth of Andreas Hammerschmidt, one of the most important masters of the early German Baroque. This CD, with the ensemble Gli Scarlattisti, presents Andreas Hammerschmidt's vocal compositions for Advent in a thematic and theologically-liturgically arranged sequence.

American Record Guide, March / April 2013
These are exciting pieces of music, reflecting all of the colorful contrasts between wind and string instruments, solo voices, and choir one might expect of this genre. We then hear how Rosenmüller exploits these same characteristics in his Latin Magnificat. It is a brilliant program, and beautifully sung and played. Notes and texts are in English.
