A world-class country yodeler who knew what to do with a good song (even if it wasn't what most artists would do with it), Slim Whitman's career was always much bigger in Britain than it was in the U.S., and while he had some big hits in the States in the early to mid-'50s, he charted hits in the U.K. on through the 1960s, long after his star had faded in the U.S. This set combines two of his later albums, 1969's Straight from the Heart and 1970's Tomorrow Never Comes, in a single package, and both were originally aimed at the British market. Whitman's career in the States rekindled in 1979 following a successful television marketing campaign for a greatest-hits collection and he went on to record more albums, all of them aimed solidly at the middle of the road. ~ Steve Leggett
