Notes & Reviews:
Lord Byron's text "The Two Foscari" captivated Verdi throughout his compositional life, finally resulting in one of his most dramatic but underperformed works. The Cetra Verdi Collection presents the tragic work in an historic recording from 1951 starring Italian greats like Bergonzi, Guelfi, Vitale, and Lombardo under Carlo Maria Giulini.

The gloomy Due Foscari was recorded. Giulini was an exciting conductor in those days, and he really stirs up some excitement in the Act 2 trio and quartet. The young Bergonzi is the star and emphatic and he's in fine voice. She also has a strong chest register and really bites into the words.
