Verdi: Don Carlo / Mirto Picchi; Maria Caniglia; Nicola Rossi-Lemeni; Eve Stignani; Paolo Silveri; Giulio Neri

Notes & Reviews:

Based on Schiller's classic tale of woe under the Spanish throne, Verdi's Don Carlo was an early success that was sorely neglected outside of Italy for parts of the 20th century. This production is part of a powerful revival in Rome in the 1950s, an electrifying production presented in historic mono to preserve the tone of the times.

I could say the same about the better-known Caniglia in Don Carlo. She's imperious and emotional. Stignani is far smoother; like Caniglia, she's also capable of surprising delicacy. Silveri's baritone is more conventionally attractive. Neri is a formidable Inquisitor. The celestial voice is a young. Conductor Previtali knows the score and style. As a bonus, Warner tosses in two arias sung by Stignani and one by Neri.
