Notes & Reviews:

Before his tragic and early death at the age of 44 in 1958, Ataúlfo Argenta was the foremost Spanish conductor of his generation and on the verge of a major international career. Argenta was not associated with Beethoven, yet this live (excellently remastered) ICA recording of the 'Eroica' with the Orquestra Nacional shows him as an exciting interpreter.

As Guido Cantelli fourteen months earlier, Ataúlfo Argenta (1913-1958) died prematurely in tragic circumstances (the inhalation of carbon monoxide in his garage after seeing too long turns the motor and the heating of the car). Even though he worked in the studio from 1953 to Decca in London and Geneva, and if some concert recordings are also available, testimony of his art is welcome, especially when it comes to almost unprecedented. Still regret that unfortunately, judging by a Third Symphony "Eroica" Beethoven (24 May 1957) looks good, despite a fluctuating sound, muffled and reverberant and the National Orchestra of Spain stamps pleasant little . Always in public, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Ansermet for which saw him his successor, is obviously sharper in the opening The Bartered Bride by Smetana (29 August 1957), slender and precise (ICAC 5087).
