Cellist Sebastian Klinger is considered one of the outstanding young soloists and chamber musicians of his generation, renowned for his warm tone, intensity of expression, flawless technique and musicality. This release is his exploration of lesser-known French literature for cello, from minor Debussy and Franck to Dutilleux.

These two young musicians have fingers of steel and an exploratory attitude. Yet my favorite performance here is of the Franck sonata. Klinger plays it with passion and fine intonation. The rest of the program is also very satisfactory. The Debussy sonata is played with enthusiasm, and the solo Strophes of Henri Dutilleux are fine as well. The program closes with a return to Debussy in his early years with the little-known Scherzo of 1882 for cello and piano - an enjoyable encore to a warmly played and solidly recorded recital. They work well together and are recorded with a solid, rich sound that brings out the drama in this fine music.
