Album Summary
Conductor Ensemble ComposerNotes & Reviews:
Margaret Rizza sang professionally for twenty-five years, before teaching at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She has directed music groups, making many recordings. She began composing in 1997 and has since earned huge admiration for her 'Classical Contemporary' sound world, works of spiritual contemplation and great beauty. Hers is music of great spiritual depth and, whether a cappella or for vocal and instrumental forces, it generates a sense of lyricism and healing resolution.
International Record Review
Rizza is a composer with a voice of her own... The Gaudete Ensemble is very much more than [an amateur group], and the composer will surely be thrilled to hear her music sing with such skill and sensitivity. The instrumental playing is faultless too, and the whole is ably held together by conductor Eamonn Dougan... if 'contemplative and spiritual' is your think... this will fit the bill.
BBC Music Magazine
Sweetly consolatory and reassuring.
American Record Guide, March / April 2013
Here we have a very enjoyable survey of lovely sacred choral pieces and a very unusual human-interest story to go along with it. While this music sounds distinctly modern, it is well rooted in the sacred classical tradition, with distinct mystical and contemplative qualities. As these consistently worthwhile pieces will be new to most of us. My favorites include Rizza's sweetly pastoral and mystic-toned setting of 'O Magnum Mysterium', as well as her nicely layered and ecstatic 'Fire of Love'. Performances, whether from the singers or players, are admirably well crafted, with no appreciable weaknesses. Choral textures and sound are typically English: bright and clear, with cool, yet committed spiritual sincerity.
