Notes & Reviews:

With over 600 lieder as well as sacred, chamber, orchestral and piano music to his name, Franz Schubert was one of the most prolific and influential composers of his generation. It was only in the decades following his untimely death that the young Austrian's genius came to be fully appreciated.

American Record Guide, May/June 2013
You never know what surprises are just around the corner in unsuspecting places. And here on a budget label are two performances by the glorious Diogenes String Quartet, formed in Munich in 1996. In addition to being "beyond technique", they deliver the kind of uplifting brightness that comes only from the most exquisite tuning, and their buoyant style is replete with transparency that reveals all the interplay among the four musicians in terms of both counterpoint and delicate expressive inhales and exhales that see far more between the lines than most groups. In Quartet 7 in D there is a special expressive uplift that comes from the Diogenes's remarkably flexible tone colors, slight touches of rubato and rhythmic instincts that constantly energize the flow. Special thanks to the engineers who have enabled us to appreciate all this in rich, balanced, transparent sound.
