Considered by many to be one of, if not the most terrifying film of all time, The Exorcist was, by almost anyone's standards, a groundbreaking work of horror, and its ominous soundtrack played a huge part in creating the movie's tension and foreboding mood. While Mike Oldfield's hauntingly syncopated "Tubular Bells" came to be known as an unofficial theme song for The Exorcist, Musical Excerpts from the Exorcist explores both that piece as well as scored work by George Crum, Hans Werner Henze, Krzysztof Penderecki, and others. From guttural string quartet arrangements to demonic tape experiments, this soundtrack captures the films ambience perfectly, encapsulating the dread and uncertainty that made it one of the most important horror movies ever. ~ Fred Thomas
