Notes & Reviews:

On this first release in a planned 3-disc anthology of piano music for the left hand, Maxime Zecchini performs works by Ravel, Scriabin, Saint-Saëns and Brahms. Paul Wittgenstein, a wealthy Austrian pianist who lost his right arm during World War I, commissioned many composers to write for the left hand, and thanks to him we have works such as Ravel's glorious Piano Concerto, heard here in a transcription for solo piano. The other works on the disc are transcriptions and original compositions that show the musical depth that is possible with only one hand.

American Record Guide, May/June 2013
These are all expertly performed and will have you searching for scores (most are available on imslp.org) because you can't believe your ears. Try sitting at the piano to play some of these. I got far enough to realize how much more practice and independent control over the five fingers of your left hand it requires. Another area that must be mentioned is pedaling. Fundamental to left hand works is being able to catch and hold lower notes while playing the melody up in higher registers. Here Zecchini is a true master, sustaining but never blurring harmonies. Production values from the new label Ad Vitam are quite high - great artwork and booklet notes as well as superb recorded sound. I simply can't wait for the next two releases in this series.
