Notes & Reviews:
Michaels Reise um die Erde (Michael's Journey Around the World) is the second act of the opera Donnerstag from the seven-part opera cycle Licht by Karlheinz Stockhausen. It is a cosmic world theatre in which three protagonists each have been assigned a characterizing melody (a musical "formula") which unfolds through the musical action of the entire opera cycle. The ensemble music Fabrik is heard here in a live recording from the Théâtre Bobigny in Paris.
American Record Guide, May/June 2013
The whole project took him 25 years to complete and adds up to about 29 hours of music. In this fragment of the spiritual work, the angel Michael's journey around the earth is divided into visits to Cologne, New York, Japan, Bali, India, and Africa. Michael - represented by the trumpet - is the guardian of human incarnation, while Eva - represented by the basset horn - is the sovereign power of love and life. The sound is great and the music engaging. This is a considerable upgrade over the previous ECM recording (Nov/Dec 1993).
