Notes & Reviews:

This album, featuring works by three great composers - Szymanowski Shostakovich and Stravinsky - presents different facets of 20th century song. Jadwiga Rappe, one of the most-known Polish altos, has appeared on stage in numerous European countries, the U.S., Canada and Japan.

American Record Guide, January/February 2014
Shostakovich's Spanish Songs, Op. 100, are settings of folk songs translated into Russian; according to the notes, the tunes and texts come from an orphan of the Spanish Civil War who was brought back to Russia. The lyrics are of pretty good quality, especially 'Little Stars': "Under the old cypresses the water near the shore is gleaming. The Six Songs on Poems by Marina Tsvetaeva, Op. 143, are very much late Shostakovich. Stravinsky's Cat's Lullabies round out the program; he wrote them in 1915 and 1916 and made a version for voice and three clarinets at the same time. They're brief and aphoristic.
