Notes & Reviews:
Verbum Nobile is a one-act comic opera by Moniuszko, who developed a thriving national opera movement in the 19th century Polish music. This opera, like Moniuszko's other major operatic compositions, depict the charming and unpretentious picture of old-Polish customs.
American Record Guide, July/August 2013
The performance here recorded originated at the Opera at the Castle in Szczecin, a city in western Poland. All five singers make at least a good impression. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the music is the orchestration, which exhibits originality. The composer had met Smetana and Liszt, and his orchestral writing may have been influenced by such acquaintances. This is a fine performance of a very enjoyable comic opera that should be performed more often. A full libretto is included, along with some short articles about the work's history.
