Notes & Reviews:

This collection of popular choral classics starts with some of the glories of the Baroque era by some of its greatest composers like Vivaldi, Handel Johann Sebastian Bach, beginning with the uplifting opening of Vivaldi's famous 'Gloria'. Other Baroque masterpieces heard throughout the set include the stirring 'Hallelujan Chorus' from Handel's Messiah and Purcell's very moving: 'Thou knowest, Lord' played during the funeral service of the late Princess Diana. Composers from the Romantic era include Schubert, Mendelssohn, Berlioz, Brahms, Parry and Verdi, and there is a strong representation of later composers such as Poulenc, Rahcmaninov, Faure Durufle and Bernstein. Also included are some more modern works that have attained greater popularity in recent times such as Barber's 'Agnus Dei' (a choral version of his famous 'Adagio for Strings'), 'The lamb' by John Tavener and the Agnus Dei from 'The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace' by Karl Jenkins.

Essential Classics is a series of 2-CD sets drawn from the catalogs of EMI Classics presenting the best-loved and most popular works by the great composers, performed by the world's leading artist. The series provides a good introduction to classical music and will appeal to those who are seeking the most familiar classical pieces that have been heard in the popular media such as major films and TV commercials.
