Notes & Reviews:
Among the oldest pieces of music known to man today the chants known as plainsong that have been sung for many hundreds of years by monks in Christian monasteries. Gregorian chant is named after Pope Gregory the Great (540-604). According to medieval legend, he was inspired by God with the simple, plaintive melodies that ever since have formed the chief means by which monastic communities praise God in song. Though the origins of chant pre-date Gregory's time, and though the bulk of surviving chant was composed from the eight to the tenth centuries, the story about Gregory has some basis in fact: this highly learned and cultivate pope was certainly instrumental in gathering together and rationalizing the diverse body of chants that already existed in his time. The chants are group according to the various events and festivals in the church year, and the piece which opens the mass on the first Sunday in Advent at the very beginning of the church year is 'Ad te levavi', heard here as track 6 on CD 1. The first CD ends with a group of chants sung on Palm Sunday, and the second CD begins with chants for Holy Week, the most important part of the festival of Easter. These timeless chants have found new favor with modern audiences because of their serene beauty and their ability to evoke feelings of tranquility and relaxation.
