Album Summary
Performer
Martin Roscoe (Piano)
Notes & Reviews:
This second volume of Hyperion's Dohnányi piano music series focuses on early works from the period 1897 to 1907, when he was still establishing himself within the great lineage of composer-pianists. Martin Roscoe is the ideal performer, the acknowledged master of this deeply appealing and unfairly neglected repertoire. A highlight of the album is the Variations and Fugue on a theme of EG, Op 4 - a monumental work that would soon be hailed by the Viennese press as, "the most valuable enrichment of music literature since Brahms."
BBC Music Magazine, February 2013
In the first volume of this fascinating survey, Martin Roscoe devised a programme that incorporates music from different periods in Dohnanyi's career. By contrast, much of the present disc focuses on his earlier more derivative works...all the works on this warmly recorded release [are] performed here with consummate technical mastery and musical insight.
Recording information: Potton Hall, Dunwich, Suffolk (12/07/2011-12/09/2011).
