Notes & Reviews:
This world premiere recording is an exuberant performance of Paolo Bordogna. Don Gregorio is an opera of transition between Donizetti's late youth and the beginning of his maturity and an opera in which the composer from Bergamo found the path that would soon lead him to be one of the great names of Italian opera. Recorded at the Donizetti Theatre in Bergamo.

These singers not only sing well but are delightfully involved in the comedy, with many a vocal wink and broad smile. The 2007 performances must have been a delight. Don Gregorio is available on DVD from Dynamic. Filmed in Bergamo, the stage production is from the Wexford Festival.

Musically the performance is hugely enjoyable and entertaining. There's excellent characterisation from Paolo Bordogna, in the eponymous role, and Alessandra Fratelli as Leonarda in particular.
Personnel: Giorgio Trucco, Elisaveta Martirosyan, Giorgio Valerio, Paolo Bordogna, Livio Scarpellini , Alessandra Fratelli, Luca Ludovici (vocals).
