Notes & Reviews:

Praga's superb series of SACD remasterings of classic recordings continues with this all-Berlioz program. The gem here is the great American soprano Eleanor Steber's striking 1953 account of the Nuits d'été. Partnered with Dimitri Mitropoulos leading the New York Philharmonic, it predates the legendary Columbia Symphony version the pair recorded together one year later. The pairing is Pierre Monteux's fiery 1958 recording of the Symphonie Fantastique with the Vienna Philharmonic.

American Record Guide, May/June 2013
This is the fifth recording Monteux made of the Symphonie Fantastique. The only three I know of are with the Paris Symphony from 1930, San Francisco Symphony in 1951, and this one from 1958. The result of this mating of a French conductor who knew the work intimately with the lush Vienna Philharmonic is warm, dramatic, broad, and melodic.
