Notes & Reviews:
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Otto Klemperer's death, EMI Classics pays tribute to the incomparable conductor with the release of an extensive edition of 11 luxurious yet affordably-priced boxsets. The second edition of three is available this January.
Besides being a great conductor Otto Klemperer was also a composer and when listening to his compositions you are leaf in no doubt that he was much influenced by the music of Brahms. Klemperer Edition: Brahms is a comprehensive 4-CD collection of Brahms recordings. The set features all four symphonies as well as the Acadamic Festival Overture and Tragiv Overtures and the "Haydn" Variations. In 1961 Klemperer returned to recording Brahms by committing his classic performance of Ein deutsches Requiem to disc. With the soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau as soloists and the magnificent Philharmonic Chorus this recording has remained a firm fixture in the EMI Classics catalog since its first release.
