Willy Burkhard: The face of Isaiah, The Year / Locher, Hunziker, Brechbuhler, Boog, Friedli

Notes & Reviews:

The big oratorios by Hermann Suter (1870-1926), Arthur Honegger (1892-1955), Frank Martin (1890-1974), and Willy Burkhard (1900-1955) are among the most remarkable Swiss works written in the first half of the 20th Century. Whereas Suter's Le Laudi in both test and music is still rooted in the traditions of the 19th century, this quintessentially bourgeois music genre acquired a quite particular profile in Switzerland, face as it was by the fascist threat across its borders and thus largely isolated in the world. Honegger's Cris du monde (1931) can be seen as an initial protest against the way the world was leaning, while Frank Martin's In terra pax (1944) was an act of reflection on the imminent end of the Second World War. Willy Burkhard's oratorio Das Gesicht Jesaias ("The face of Isaiah", 1935) also contained vehement criticism of the state of the world and with its text based on Isaiah it depicted "the down-fall and destruction of all that is unhealthy and untrue" (thus the composer in 1944 when discussing the genesis of the work); it was a work that hoped for a "clarification of today's chaotic world", for "peace, redemption and liberation". And for Burkhard, this "cross-section of our times" in an exterior sense was also a reflection of an inner, "spiritual life"- a conceptual principal that we find again in his later oratorio Das Jahr ("The year", 1941), though in this case in reaction to events in nature.
