Notes & Reviews:

Carl Maria von Weber's masses were written to commission for the Dresden court. As a pious Catholic, Weber was fond of sacred cult and its accompanying splendor, but he also saw church music with the eyes of a dramatist: there are so many musical references to his opera Der Freischutz in his Mass no 1 that it later gained the nickname "Freischutz Mass". The "Jubilee Mass" was written for the golden wedding celebrations of the king of queen of Saxony; this is a work of pious hope, with colorful orchestral effects and a wealth of Romantic expression.
