Notes & Reviews:

Marek Janowski's recording of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen was the first ever digital recording of the opera. With sessions beginning in 1980, the complete set was not released until 1984. The cast for the four operas consisted of legendary Wagnerians and features the authoritative Wotan of Theo Adam, the fresh-voiced Siegmund of Siegfried Jerusalem and Jessye Norman as Sieglinde, heard here at the peak of her early career. Rounding out the amazing cast are tenors René Kollo and Peter Schreier, and soprano Jeannine Altmeyer. This new 14-CD box set includes all four operas plus notes, libretti and translations. In this vast work, Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen breaks the bonds of 19 th century opera to create a music drama like no other; part myth, part parable of greed, power and politics. It is also a thrilling tale of human heroism and self-sacrifice and an orchestral tour de force all in one. With the 200th anniversary of Richard Wagner's birth in 2013, complete cycles of the Ring are scheduled with many major opera companies throughout the year, making for a timely re-issue of Janowski's definitive recording.

New York Magazine
The full panoply of Wagner's orchestra positively blooms in this warm, spacious acoustic environment and the Dresden Staatskapelleplays magnificently. Janowski never calls attention to himself as he presides over a sensitively proportioned, musically perceptive and deeply felt performance.
