Notes & Reviews:
The personal becomes political when public life and private life merge against the backdrop of socially embattled 14th century Genoa. Though not the best-known of Verdi's works, Simon Boccanegra has long been held in high esteem by opera lovers, and this recording can only help the cause. An historic 1951 recording comes to shining, remastered life.

Both of these were issued by Cetra in 1951. The Boccanegra cast is as starry as Cetra ever managed. Stella's singing is still lovely on top. Silveri is a forthright Doge, easier on the ears and once again, Petri is a pleasure to hear. Just listen to how he accompanies the great tenor aria.
