Notes & Reviews:

The medieval concept of Venus' Wheel is the symbolic framework for this collection of choral works by renowned Danish composer and composer Bo Holten (b. 1948). Holten leads the Flemish Radio Choir on a passionate journey through the many facets of love, using the whole of musical history as a framework and sounding board for his own contemporary idiom.

American Record Guide, July/August 2013
Indeed, Holten's rich-textured flair for the dramatic has made him one of northern Europe's most admired composers. He has maintained an association with the Flemish Radio Choir in recent years, and the fruits of that collaboration are on display in the present anthology. The theme is love, which is explored from a variety of poetic perspectives. Holten's Roman Elegies were inspired by two of the 20 poems Goethe crafted in response to his experiences in Rome as a young man. My favorite entry is 'Dominus Regit Me', Holten's take on the 23rd Psalm. The composer's expert use of female voices continues in the Cantigas a set of five medieval poems from Portugal translated and sung in English. You'll also be interested by this setting of 'Ich Bin der Welt Abhanden Gekommen' from Mahler's Ruckert-Lieder. The weirdo here is 'Handel With Care', the one novelty act on the program. It's hard to imagine this music performed with more authority. Superb engineering and a full-service booklet from the folks at DaCapo clinch the deal on a unique and valuable release.
