Album Remarks & Appraisals:

The Guardian
It's an accomplished, imaginative and confident contemporary world-jazz set.

Audiophile Audition
Mahanthappa's latest: the all-originals, nearly hour-long, 11-track outing Gamak, continues the sax man's evolution. Gamak reunites Mahanthappa's rhythm section, bassist Frantois Moutin and drummer Dan Weiss. Generating a fresh and different tone and Mahanthappa's ideas on re-contextualizing jazz into something multi-directional, bold and inventive.

The speed is there of course - solid, well-phrased and impressive. And the unique way the song forms are constructed gives you a lot to embrace. Each seed

sound unlocks a spiritual portal that allows you to move further into and through the music, and since the beat cycles expand and contract, you get to move across several thresholds at once. Gamak will bring you many surprising and uplifting moments of joy and is a fine example of direct transmission.
