Notes & Reviews:

Shakespeare's Memory is the first offering in Navona's Shakespeare Concerts Series. Vol. 1 includes Summer's original chamber and vocal compositions set to Shakespeare's dramas and sonnets and the poetry of Milton and Yeats, performed by a variety of groups and musicians.

American Record Guide, July/August 2015
The first program, Shakespeare's Memory, is the title of one movement from Summer's string quartet (The Garden of Forking Paths) that is based on Jorge Luis Borge's final story, Shakespeare's Memory, where the bard's memory is acquired by a character named Borges. The program also presents five of Summer's sonnet settings for one or two singers accompanied by string quartet; two selections each from his operas Hamlet and The Tempest; a setting of Milton's 'On the Death of a Fair Infant'; a setting of Yeats's 'Leda and the Swan'; and one composition not written by Summer - William Byrd's 'Earle of Oxfords Marche' in honor of Summer's presumed literary source. With her rich tonal color Kellie Van Horn gives a marvelous performance of 'Leda and the Swan'. The balance between voice and quartet favors the strings so much that the vocal line sometimes gets buried in the rich soundscape. The Kalima Quartet plays beautifully in accompanying 7 of these 12 works. Best of all is Maria Ferrante's superb singing of 'If by Your Art' from The Tempest accompanied by harpist Lydie HSrtelovS.
