Nino Rota was commissioned by the "Pro Civitate" in Assisi to musically elucidate an article from the Creed (or symbol of faith), to which a week of study had been dedicated; it was first performed in the amphitheater in Assisi on the evening of August 29, 1962. The libretto, written with the assistance of Vinci Verginelli, was taken from the Old and New Testaments, from early Christian writings and from liturgical text.
