Notes & Reviews:

This is the fourth volume in the Gaubert series, featuring his lesser knows vocal works. Philippe Gaubert was a French musician who was a distinguished flutist, a respected conductor, and a composer, primarily for the flute and orchestra.

American Record Guide, July/August 2013
French flautist, conductor, and composer Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a prominent figure in the musical life of his country between the two world wars, serving as principal flute of the Paris Opera and later as its principal conductor. As a composer, his works for flute are his best known; rarely have his 90 or so songs been explored. This program presents 34 settings of texts by poets of his time, about half of them by Paul Fort, many of them related to boats and water. His compositional style will remind you of other French composers of the 19th Century and later. The singers are adequate. Peintre is the better of the two. Jacquon does an admirable job of accompanying and has been a champion. Timpani deserves thanks for making this music more accessible. The recorded sound is good.
