Franz Danzi's outstanding wind quintets rank first among his works in today's concert repertoire. During his lifetime Danzi was famous for his operas, symphonies, and concertos, with which he revealed a fantastic new musical world.
Danzi's wonderful flute quartets are based on a common concept. The unusual spectrum of expressive forms means that repetitions or even mere similarities between the works do not initially occur to the listener. There are dramatic opera scenes, enthralling concertos, a Venetian gondola song, marvelous depths of the greatest gloom, and delightful bel canto songs.
The works find their ideal advocates in the Ardinghello Ensemble around the flutist Karl Kaiser, and its members have especially close ties to this world of ideas from the romantic era.
