He's on his best behavior in these scores, clearly intended to be "serious" works; and passages like 'Concerning Hobbits' have a naive charm that's hard to dislike. The more dramatic sequences make for some spectacular moments.

Music from The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings features selections from each of the first four (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King) films in the series. Fans of director Peter Jackson's vision of Middle Earth and composer Howard Shore's award-winning score will recognize all of the tracks, yet should keep in mind that they are not the versions that appear in the films or official soundtracks, though the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra does an admirable job in interpreting them. ~ James Christopher Monger
