Notes & Reviews:

Recorded in Naples at the church of Sant'Anna dei Lombardi in July 2011, this live album from the Neapolis Ensemble presents a selection of Neapolitan music spanning four centuries. The music on Lo Guarracino ranges from traditional melodies and dances of the 15th and 16th centuries to an18th century Classical aria by Leonardo Vinci. In pursuit of an ideal mix classic and traditional music, the Neapolis Ensemble performs on both classical instruments like the violoncello and baroque flutes and popular instruments like the tambourine, mandolin and guitar. The group performs in a wide range of venues - from opera houses to ethnic music festivals - ever reinventing the traditional Neapolitan musical repertoire.

American Record Guide, July/August 2013
Most of the songs are in such a folk style, though there is one that is religious - another long one - about Mary and Joseph seeking a place for the Christ child to be born. These are performed entirely in a folk style. A nice addition to the instrument lineup is a mandolin, which is part of what gives the music a folk flavor. The notes correctly allude to "that lightness which is the basis of the Neapolitan musical tradition, which wants the music to be principally a nice element of everyday life". The notes have texts and translations. Excellent sound.
