John Rutter: The Piper of Hamelin, children's' opera / Marco Agostini, tenor; Classix - junges Solistenensemble

Notes & Reviews:

Captivating rhythms, profoundly moving melodies, and winning hits with all-time-great potential distinguish the music of John Rutter.

Rutter composed his opera The Piper of Hamlin on the basis of the rat-catcher legend, and it was originally intended for a school performance.

Hard to believe: it now appears for the first time on CD with the ECHO award-winning children and young people from Bobbys Klassik and the Beethoven Orchestra of Bonn.

Despite its popularity, Rutter's music is absolutely demanding and avails itself of means in keeping with its times. The piper's iridescent leitmotif is based on a whole-tone scale and thus lends his appearance a touch of the mysterious and magical.

Bernhard Hoëcker is the narrator and introduces the action with Hanna Lüdecke. The action includes witty German acted scenes between the English song numbers and thus can easily be understood even by young listeners. The mastery with which the young vocal soloists take charge of their parts is simply remarkable.

It is so simple that it invites us to sing along, if possible, in the karaoke version included as a bonus at the end of the CD.
