Notes & Reviews:

TINE is the eponymous recital disc by the exciting young Norwegian trumpet virtuoso Tine Thing Helseth. Her first two albums for EMI Classics (Storyteller and tenThing's 10) were critically acclaimed, with Gramophone praising her soulful approach to phrasing, quite astonishingly outstanding intonation and open and honest sound. Now Tine Thing Helseth presents a personal choice of transcribed songs and original works which reveal the trumpet's lyric voice and takes us on a varied journey through the musical landscape of the late 19th and 20th centuries.

TINE features original compositions for trumpet and piano by Ibert, Glazunov, Enescu Edvard Hagenrup Bull and Hindemith; trumpet and piano arrangements of works by Puccini, de Fella, Rachmaninov and Kreisler and the Divertimento for solo trumpet by istein Sommerfeldt. Helseth's partner is pianist Kathryn Stott, with whom she tours this captivating repertoire in 2013-14 in the US.

The Norwegian trumpeter encapsulates many moods in her choice of repertoire.

Gramophone Magazine, May 2013
Helseth's playing is stylish in every way and there is ready virtuosity when required...Stott obviously identifies with her and both artists achieve striking spontaneity.

American Record Guide, July/August 2013
There have always been female trumpet players - lots of them. Two are prominent now: England's Alison Balsom and Norway's Tine Thing Helseth. I have reviewed several of Ms Balsom's excellent albums. Ms Helseth's fourth, it is the first to come my way. It offers a nice mix of repertory staples, Norwegian pieces, and arrangements of melodious pieces that suit her pure, singing tone. I must say, first (and Ms Helseth would agree), that Kathryn Stott's piano artistry is a significant element in this collection. Everything is thoughtful and beautifully shaped. EMI can't resist using glamorous photos of Helseth and Balsom on their album covers and both are terrific trumpet players with beautiful tone qualities, singing playing styles, and impressive technical skills. Their programs are nicely varied, too.
