Notes & Reviews:

This interesting new release comes to us from Victorian Opera Northwest, whose UK director Raymond Walker - together with conductor Richard Bonynge - have carried out extensive research into the development of the British Opera movement which began in the 1830s and stretched to the 1890s. Victorian Opera Northwest promotes the excellent forgotten music of 19th-century operas by talented British and Irish composers. Their music used to be extremely popular in its time, yet it has been unjustly neglected since. With the aid of well-known musicians, Victorian Opera researches contemporary sources, typesets fresh orchestral parts taken from original manuscripts, and prints scores containing rare repertoire. Their latest efforts have resulted in a superbly enjoyable disc of 19th-century opera overtures, consisting mostly of premiere recordings.

American Record Guide, May/June 2013
The Night Dancers by Edward James Loder are the Wilis familiar to generations of balletomanes from Adam's Giselle - the spirits of maidens who have died on their wedding day. Also in this category is Lurline by William Vincent Wallace based on the familiar Rhinemaidens of German legend, the Lorelei set by many other composers. A placid watery setting gives way to Lurline's seductive melody in the strings, set against a more vigorous passage for the water nymph's beloved Count Rupert. The Amber Witch is the story of the pastor's daughter Mary, who finds a rich vein of amber in the nearby hills and generously uses it to help out her impoverished friends. His Lily of Killarney was one of three operas Beecham dubbed "The English Ring"; the others were Balfe's Bohemian Girl and Wallace's Maritana. The Siege of Rochelle was a great success for Balfe and understandably has quite a martial character. The notes are generally quite informative. Crystalclear sonics too.
