Arranger: Ennio Morricone .
While Ennio Morricone's work with Sergio Leone helped to define a genre and cement his reputation as a cinematic institution, Morricone Pops takes a look at the Italian composer and conductor's work from the late '50s and early '60s. Even though the songs here are meant to be light and poppy, Morricone is able to imbue them with a level of quality and craftsmanship that makes them something more than mere bubblegum numbers meant to be enjoyed and forgotten. For fans of Morricone's later work, Morricone Pops seems to foreshadow the coming of one of cinema's great composers, but with its sultry, swinging sounds, all it really takes to enjoy this album is a love of classic Italian pop. ~ Gregory Heaney
