Notes & Reviews:

The Zemlinsky Quartet presents Spain Through Strings - an original selection of Spanish and Spanish-inspired works for strings. The program begins on a more traditional note with the third String Quartet by short-lived genius Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga, nicknamed "The Spanish Mozart." The romantic Spanish flavor shifts into high gear with programmatic works for quartet by Turina and Toldrá including a perennial concert favorite, Turina's La Oración del Torero, best known in its later version for string orchestra. The collection concludes with a work by Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco featuring guitarist Miriam Rodriguez Brüllova, who joins the quartet for the composer's 1950 Guitar Quintet, written for the great Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia.

American Record Guide, July/August 2013
I felt that their second place finish was just right: their technique, ensemble, and grasp of form was superb. That is what I hear in the Arriaga: they caught its classicism perfectly. The same is true in the Turina. For this work's full emotion listen to the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra on DG. The Slovakian guitarist and Czech quartet are perfectly blended. Form, forward flow, and tempo changes are utterly integrated. The lovely Andante Mesto moves forward but with an ease that lets its long lines feel. The Scherzo moves smartly and flexibly - these players have a wonderful way of easing up. I suspect these works were recorded with only one microphone. The perfectly balanced sound is warm and every detail clear.
